Therapy That Understands Your World
Sherni Counselling & Mediation was created from the belief that people should not have to leave their culture, faith, identity or family experience at the door in order to be understood in therapy.
Culture can be a source of identity, belonging and strength, but there can also be times when culture, family, faith, sexuality, relationships and individual choices overlap in complicated ways.
My work provides space for conversations around arranged marriage and family involvement in relationships, cultural and generational expectations, faith and religion, interracial and interfaith relationships, sexuality and LGBTQ+ identity, coming out or choosing not to disclose, gender expectations, family and community pressures, racism and discrimination, divorce and relationship stigma, serious illness and changes in health.
Arranged marriage should not automatically be treated as forced marriage, and cultural or religious practices should not automatically be viewed as a problem. Equally, where somebody feels pressured, controlled or unsafe, they should have a confidential space to explore this.
The same applies to sexuality and LGBTQ+ identity. Therapy is not about telling somebody whether they should come out, who they should tell or how they should live. It provides a confidential space to understand what they feel and make their own decisions.
I do not assume that two people from the same culture, faith, profession, sexuality or community will have the same experience.
Therapy should understand the person in front of you and the world they actually live in.
